(His gaze is hard, unyielding; his are the eyes of someone who has seen their end and been haunted by its repercussions. There are scars on his face - he has no way of hiding them - and the tip of one of his pointed ears is missing entirely. But his voice is deep and strong; it resonates in the manner of a King.)

I do not know what good I can offer or why so much power was expended to bring me to this place...

(He takes a breath, pausing for a beat, his stern features relaxing minutely.)

But I thank you. I would not have seen my family otherwise.

(Maedhros is clearly not comfortable being overly demonstrative, so he moves on swiftly, looking thoughtful.)

I have loved books since I was an Elfling; I did not realize they had such power to pull us into their tales. We have been given a curious flock.

I wouldn't know, [ Elladan shrugs shyly ] We do not know much of our father's past.

I do not know if it is my place to reveal it, then. (Is there a reason his foster son won't speak of the past? Is it out of pain?)

[ BIG PUPPY DOG EYES ]

But Grandfather, you knew Uncle Elros! Father doesn't speak of it because he misses his brother, but you knew them both!

(Do not use those on him!) ...I did. I do. They...

(His features soften with sorrowful affection.) ...came as a pair. Always. Elros was protective of your father.

[ Is it working? ]

That's good. [ Elladan says softly ] No wonder Father misses him. I suppose having Glorfindel and Erestor around must have been a bit like having Uncle.

(Effortlessly.)

A very small Elros brandished a blade at us when we first met. He stood between us and Elrond, completely unrelenting. (Some might be angry, but Maedhros had been impressed.) I like Glorfindel and Erestor, but they are not your uncle.

Elladan huffs softly in wonder ]

He must have been very brave. Did you know Glorfindel and Erestor?

Fearless. (His little warrior.) I let him fight me as much as he liked.

(A feat that soon ended in laughter once they bonded.)

I knew of Glorfindel and, yes, I know Erestor. He served my brothers.

[ Elladan laughs ]

No wonder father sometimes mutters that I remind him of Uncle, when he thinks I am not listening.

Oooh, really? He has never said. Erestor does not speak of his past often.

(His eyebrows rise in amusement.)

Elros was certainly more head-strong on matters that were of importance to him. No one mattered more to him than your father, I think, especially at the beginning.

(But that child always followed his heart.)

Would you if you knew the Fëanorians?

[ He nods thoughtfully ]

I feel the same way about 'Roh. [ He confesses ]

Well... I suppose it might get odd looks...but I'm going to tell!

That comes naturally for brothers; especially so for twins. The Ambarussa were bonded so too.

(Oh he misses them. Even speaking of them hurts.)

Odd looks are the least of your worry with some.

There are very few tales of the Ambarussa. [ Tell him some? ]

And I fear neither looks nor words. My sister is not the only one who is willing to make bold choices for love.

Their lives were so brief that many forgot about them. (But he hasn't.) They were two halves of a whole. When they were children, you could not tell them apart unless you knew them very well. As they grew, their hair ceased to perfectly match, so the task was easier.

(His eyebrows rise.) Love? I am not worthy of that.

That is rather unfair. [ Elladan opinions ] A life is still a life. They sound a bit like 'Roh and I, although we have the same hair, still.

And I think I already gave my opinion on that, grandfather!

Yes, it is. (Much in the world is unfair.) Hair you inherited from your dear father. Elros had hair like yours too, though he cut it short.

That does not mean I accept it! (He gives an amused huff.)

Did he? Well I suppose Men tend to wear their hair shorter, this is true. Estel always claimed it was more practical, although he wore it elf-style when he was younger. Did father ever cut his hair?

[ Elladan grins at him ]

Well I'm not stopping giving it, so you'll just have to manage.

Men seem to favor shorter styles; when they are on the move, for example, or in battle, they do not like their hair getting in the way. (He chuckles suddenly.) Ah once. Elros had a liking for the styles of Men and he was adamant about changing his hair to mimic them. Elrond thought it a mistake and said that if Elros followed through with it, he would cut his off too.

Needless to say, Elros did follow through and only one of the twins liked the outcome. (Poor Elrond.) Kano and I reassured your father it would grow back.

[ Elladan laughs so hard he cries at the thought ]

Poor Ada! He must have been so angry!

I had to pick him up and console him. (Because Maedhros cannot deny a small, unhappy child.)

[ Elladan giggles, wiping the tears from his eyes ]

Oh dear. I bet Uncle was very apologetic too.

Not in the least. (He smirks.) He thought Elrond exceptionally silly for being upset.

Oh dear!

[ He is hiccupping from all the laughing ]
