(His gaze is hard, unyielding; his are the eyes of someone who has seen their end and been haunted by its repercussions. There are scars on his face - he has no way of hiding them - and the tip of one of his pointed ears is missing entirely. But his voice is deep and strong; it resonates in the manner of a King.)

I do not know what good I can offer or why so much power was expended to bring me to this place...

(He takes a breath, pausing for a beat, his stern features relaxing minutely.)

But I thank you. I would not have seen my family otherwise.

(Maedhros is clearly not comfortable being overly demonstrative, so he moves on swiftly, looking thoughtful.)

I have loved books since I was an Elfling; I did not realize they had such power to pull us into their tales. We have been given a curious flock.

I can imagine the pain he feels. (Losing brothers is never easy and the pain never really dulls.) Elros was the fire to your father's water. He was proud, rash and mischievous. He kept me on my toes with his plans and it did not wholly shock me when he chose the most difficult path.

(His eyes soften and he smiles.)

Good. Do not leave your brother to grieve.

Father misses him. [ Elladan agrees quietly ]

I can see how much he hurts. Arwen...my sister will chose the same way, I know. But if Elrohir chooses that... I can't leave him. Father will be so hurt, though.

I would expect so. (Maedhros's eyes are haunted, distant with memories that have long been forgotten by their world.)

Your sister? (A girl? He looks strangely pleased by the revelation and saddened by it.) Why does she choose mortality?

Because... she fell in love.

[ Elladan smiles, bitter sweet ]

She loves our foster brother, the boy who followed in my footsteps and I watched grow into a Man. I am so happy for them both. But I hate him a bit sometimes too. But like Luthien, who she has always resembled so much, Arwen has chosen the bitter with the sweet.

(Ah. Love. Maedhros can vaguely recall such a feeling - long ago - but it is foreign to him now.)

Your foster-brother? (A child of Elros or...truly fostered from another family?) She has made her choice willingly - like Lúthien and like Elros. You must count the time you have together as a blessing and then bid her adieu when she ventures to the Halls of Mandos.

(He exhales tiredly, sadly.)

Encourage your brother to remain an Elf, Elladan. It is important that you do so if your father must shoulder that grief.

Aye - his father... [ Elladan falters, briefly ]

His father and us were good friends. But... Uncle Elros' line has long been hunted. We... couldn't save him. His son was but a young child, only just learning to walk! And there was fever, in the village. It was decided we would take the child and his mother with us to Rivendell, where Father could protect them.

He called us his brothers... [ He shakes his head ] We could not but love him.

[ He sighs shakily ]

We know, but how can I make him choose against his heart, if that is the way he us drawn?

(These poor children. Even with the Silmarils out of reach, they suffer. Is that part of the Fëanorian curse?)

You could not tell him no. (He knows the charms of little children in their blunt honesty.) Thank you for rescuing them, Elladan. Elros would be proud of you.

(His brow furrows and he gazes at nothing in particular, lost in the tangled web of his memories.)

He must. You must. Your father has suffered in ways you cannot imagine. To lose his brother, his wife, his daughter...

He needs his twins.

Yeah. He was so cute!

[ Elladan smiles ]

Do you really think so? We never knew him. And ... we know, but... I do not know what Elrohir wants, but Arwen is not the only one drawn to humanity.

[ Elladan's mother named him well ]

Most children are - for the benefit of all. (Since they bring happiness with their appearance alone.)

I know so. Elros was a Man of action and doing what he thought right. There was not an ounce of cowardice in him.

(He might be biased. But only a little.)

I will speak with him. My feelings on the matter have not changed even so. Elrond deserves to reunite with his family on the shores of Valinor.

If... Elrohir chooses humanity he will do it for me. [ Elladan admits ]

He knows... I will choose what he chooses, but... I see my foster brother and I...

[ I envy him ]

Then do not allow him to choose that path for you. (Maedhros is not quite pleading.)

And you what? What do you see in him that you are lacking?

Estel...the Dunedain... [ Elladan grapples to explain feelings he has been trying diligently to ignore ]

They are so alive, grandfather! They feel everything so sharply and they are always moving, it seems, reaching for a new horizon. It... chafes at me, sometimes. I keep wondering... what if...

(There is understanding in his expression. He too has watched Men and felt that...longing. It must be stronger for Peredhels.)

Yes, they are. But you can admire them without being one of them. There is great life in you too. The long years make it difficult to see, I know. However I can see it in you; like a warm flame.

[ Elladan flushes shyly ]

You honor me, grandfather. I ... try not to think about it very much. But I keep wondering.

Curiosity is harmless; everyone experiences it. You are bound to feel the pull more than most, but I trust you will make a decision that is good for yourself, your brother and your family.

[ A huff and Elladan nods ]

I will try, grandfather. Thank you.

I do trust your judgement. I just want you to keep your father in mind.

[ Elladan nods, slow and thoughtful ]

You speak wisdom, grandfather. I will remember.

You are your father's son. All the wisdom you need is already inside of you.

[ Elladan grins at him ]

You need to say that to Erestor, who always insists I have none!

It is his duty to be cautious; to guide you and be strict. (He chuckles.) He does so out of love.

But caution is often boring~

[ Elladan grins at him teasingly - he's old enough to know better, of course he is, but he likes seeing Maedhros smile ]

Then you must lead a boring existence and live on! (He purses his lips to hide a smile. Nope! Be good. He's watching.)

[ Elladan's eyes sparkle, pleased that Maedhros is playing back, and he pouts at him ]

But boring is no fun at all!

(He shrugs, playing the part of being heartless.)

Who said life needed to be fun?
