(His gaze is hard, unyielding; his are the eyes of someone who has seen their end and been haunted by its repercussions. There are scars on his face - he has no way of hiding them - and the tip of one of his pointed ears is missing entirely. But his voice is deep and strong; it resonates in the manner of a King.)

I do not know what good I can offer or why so much power was expended to bring me to this place...

(He takes a breath, pausing for a beat, his stern features relaxing minutely.)

But I thank you. I would not have seen my family otherwise.

(Maedhros is clearly not comfortable being overly demonstrative, so he moves on swiftly, looking thoughtful.)

I have loved books since I was an Elfling; I did not realize they had such power to pull us into their tales. We have been given a curious flock.

Sooooo boring!

If they include my family, they will be anything but!

I dunno...I figure it will mostly have lots of boring notes about day to day running of Imladris!

Imladris is my home. You'd like it! Father built it. He always said, he wanted a home where everyone was welcome.

Not us. Otherwise it would come to ruin.

I'm sure it's beautiful.

[ Elladan's eyes flash, a reminder of the fact that he has a temper too, under that playful personality ]

Everyone. [ He insists stubbornly ] Father was very clear, and Erestor and Glorfindel enforce that rule. He would have been so glad if you could have seen it.

I could argue with you, but what would be the point? My body was reduced to ashes before you were born.

(He doesn't like crushing spirits, but this is perhaps the safer route.)

[ STUBBORNLY CROSSES ARMS ]

And if you had not been, you would have been welcome there. Father missed you.

[ Elladan uses GUILT ]

(He is not immune to the image of Elrond missing him. It isn't fair for that child or this one. Maedhros shifts uncomfortably.)

We did what was right by him. He might have perished with me or worse. (But there had been tears and long nights of arguing against their consciences.)

He knows. [ Elladan softens ]

Father always said that he understood why you did it. He just missed you, that's all. Glorfindel and Erestor used to say that Imladris welcomed everyone, because he remembered what it was like to be welcomed in a place where he should have been an enemy. That was thanks to both of you, Grandfather.

We miss him. (Very much so. Elrond and Elros had made true parents out of Maedhros and Maglor. The loss of them was yet another agony to add to their plentiful store.)

How could we make an enemy out of children? I...considered...doing something unforgivable when we first met, but Kano stayed my hand until my anger passed.

(His temper was how his madness revealed itself.)

Then I saw them for...themselves. Frightened twins.

They were captives, after all. [ Elladan shrugs ]

Erestor was very clear that they were supposed to be used as bargaining chips. But you didn't. Father remembers that.

They were children. Scared children who had lost their parents and their city. (He speaks softly - perhaps in the same manner he had greeted Elrond and Elros.)

We know children.

Father said you were very kind with them both, despite everything. [ Elladan smiles at him ]

He never forgot. And I am proud to call you grandfather.

Your father was the gentler of the two. I love them both, but it was Elros that took longer to accept us. (The stubborn little Elf had earned his respect.) He was ready to defend Elrond against us.

(Maedhros smiles sadly.)

Have you and your brother spoken of your choice? Will you choose mortality?

Will you tell me about Uncle Elros? Father does not like to speak of him, much.

[ Elladan looks away, but his voice is firm ]

I won't do to my brother what Uncle Elros did. Wherever Elrohir goes, I will follow.

I can imagine the pain he feels. (Losing brothers is never easy and the pain never really dulls.) Elros was the fire to your father's water. He was proud, rash and mischievous. He kept me on my toes with his plans and it did not wholly shock me when he chose the most difficult path.

(His eyes soften and he smiles.)

Good. Do not leave your brother to grieve.

Father misses him. [ Elladan agrees quietly ]

I can see how much he hurts. Arwen...my sister will chose the same way, I know. But if Elrohir chooses that... I can't leave him. Father will be so hurt, though.

I would expect so. (Maedhros's eyes are haunted, distant with memories that have long been forgotten by their world.)

Your sister? (A girl? He looks strangely pleased by the revelation and saddened by it.) Why does she choose mortality?

Because... she fell in love.

[ Elladan smiles, bitter sweet ]

She loves our foster brother, the boy who followed in my footsteps and I watched grow into a Man. I am so happy for them both. But I hate him a bit sometimes too. But like Luthien, who she has always resembled so much, Arwen has chosen the bitter with the sweet.

(Ah. Love. Maedhros can vaguely recall such a feeling - long ago - but it is foreign to him now.)

Your foster-brother? (A child of Elros or...truly fostered from another family?) She has made her choice willingly - like Lúthien and like Elros. You must count the time you have together as a blessing and then bid her adieu when she ventures to the Halls of Mandos.

(He exhales tiredly, sadly.)

Encourage your brother to remain an Elf, Elladan. It is important that you do so if your father must shoulder that grief.

Aye - his father... [ Elladan falters, briefly ]

His father and us were good friends. But... Uncle Elros' line has long been hunted. We... couldn't save him. His son was but a young child, only just learning to walk! And there was fever, in the village. It was decided we would take the child and his mother with us to Rivendell, where Father could protect them.

He called us his brothers... [ He shakes his head ] We could not but love him.

[ He sighs shakily ]

We know, but how can I make him choose against his heart, if that is the way he us drawn?

(These poor children. Even with the Silmarils out of reach, they suffer. Is that part of the Fëanorian curse?)

You could not tell him no. (He knows the charms of little children in their blunt honesty.) Thank you for rescuing them, Elladan. Elros would be proud of you.

(His brow furrows and he gazes at nothing in particular, lost in the tangled web of his memories.)

He must. You must. Your father has suffered in ways you cannot imagine. To lose his brother, his wife, his daughter...

He needs his twins.

Yeah. He was so cute!

[ Elladan smiles ]

Do you really think so? We never knew him. And ... we know, but... I do not know what Elrohir wants, but Arwen is not the only one drawn to humanity.
